A Dragon Celebrates Her Birthday!

Birthday Dragon

*** Doing the happy dragon dance… *** Today was my birthdaaay — Today was my birthdaaay — Today was my birthdaaay …

Had an absolutely wonderful birthday today and managed to be relatively lazy — to enjoy it even better…

Actually, in a way, it started off yesterday evening, when a very dear old friend of mine came in from Ottawa on a whim. Usually he only does what I have nicknamed “hit-n-run” visits, as he barely stays long enough for a cup of tea. This time was different, as he stayed and told us about his recent bad luck – he was in a car accident during the weekend; luckily, nobody was hurt, but his car suffered serious damage. Lots of chatting later, we decide to go to the Calories café for some early birthday cake, but my partner suggested some “real” food first, so we ended up going to Moe’s deli for a real meal. I enjoyed a nice Montreal smoked meat sandwich with a side of caesar salad, which really left no room for dessert. Oh well, another time…

We were all so pleasantly stuffed that we simply headed back to the house. I was about to suggest to my friend that he nap for an hour or so before driving back to Ottawa, since he seemed so dozy on a full stomach, when he mentioned that he thought he might even stay the night. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased, as he is usually more likely to head straight back to Ottawa.

Instead of getting up at the god-awful hour of 4 am, he decided that he would be late (as there are so many times he works extra hours anyway), and get up at 6 am before driving back. Well, when he finally did fall asleep deeply, he ended up getting up at 8:30 am, which is quite a rarity for him. It was such a delight to have him for an extended visit — he had so many great stories to share and had us laughing repeatedly that it left me with such a warm feeling inside…

I let myself sleep in late today — no alarm, just get up when my body felt totally rested up, which ended up being around 11:30 am. Just spent the day mostly in my waterbed with my trusty TiBook laptop, catching up on email, reading mailing list digests and just a touch of real web work so as to not feel too guilty…

I got several birthday phone calls from family and emails from online friends throughout the day. Had a quick shower in the late afternoon and got ready for dinner, as the in-laws were treating us to a Birthday Dinner at one of my favourite restaurants, the upscale Baton Rouge, which is well known for it’s succulent babyback ribs and chicken.

Then it was back to their place for my favourite kind of home-made birthday cake and then a few gifts. I was delighted with the beautifully hand-stitched dragon artwork that was created by my Mom-in-law for me, and I was also totally blown away by a sizable gift cheque from them, that I will happily be applying towards the new top-of-the-line Apple laptop that I am planning on buying for myself soon, as a combination Birthday/Xmas present.

All in all, a delightful and memorable day that has given me happy fuzzies inside…
