D’uh! Google accidentally deletes its own blog!

Google blog

Another one from the DUH files:

Well, you’ll officially never have to feel silly about doing anything stupid to your blog every again… Last night, web giant Google managed to accidentally delete their own blog — and I seriously doubt that any of us can top that one!

—————-

The accident happened on Monday night; order has since been restored and the blogger who temporarily “owned” the Googleblog.blogspot.com address has won major crowing rights on the blogosphere.

“The blog was mistakenly deleted by us (d’oh!) which allowed the blog address to be temporarily claimed by another user. This was not a hack, and nobody guessed our password.,” Jason Goldman, Blogger Product Manager, wrote on the official blog.

Google uses its blog to make announcements and communicate with its huge user base. On Monday night (US time) the site went blank, returning a “Not Found” page. Shortly after, the following single post appeared on the site:

Google, fix your blog pleeasssee!
(P.S. Just to clear things up, I’m not associated with Google at all. I just wanted to take advantage of this before someone else with less worthy intentions did. The username was giving a 404, so I tried registering a new blog with it. Surprisingly, it worked. Oh, and no posting URLs in the comments or else they’ll be deleted.)

The temporary owner of what is arguably the world’s most watched blog is Trey Philips of the Lazykarma. He claims to have owned the Google blog address for all of 36 minutes before Google reclaimed it and restored the missing content.

Geez, Google is just not having a good year so far, are they? Between the Bush/DoJ subpeona for search queries and now this…

And what kind of silly/stupid/d’uh type things have you ever done to your blog? Any other silly blog stories? Come on, spill the blog beans!

  1. Boston Boi,

Damn, I knew there was some other Google fiasco that I couldn’t quite remember… thanks for reminding me!

Hmmm… there must be someway to “unban” someone from your blog — you could always check with ALT support, although that could take weeks considering their response rate! ::rolls eyes::

  2. Google’s dealing with the Chinese government concerning restricted web searches are questionable too.

I don’t think I’ve done anything stupid on my blog…well…other than some lame humor at times. Wait…I accidentally banned someone once. I hit the button by mistake that bans people from posting. That was pretty stupid.
