Canada now allows “X” Gender on Passports

canadian_passport

Canadians will now be allowed to have a neutral gender on their Canadian passport and immigration documents.

The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced that a new gender designation, “X,” for those who don’t identify as male or female, will be available starting Aug. 31st, 2019.

“Canadian citizens and residents deserve to be respected and have the opportunity to live according to their own identity. As of today, individuals who do not identify exclusively as female or male can have an “X” printed on their passport, travel document, citizenship certificate or permanent resident card.”

Those who would like to replace their current documents with gender “X” can do so with no fee until June 4, 2020.

It’s the latest in a series of policy changes supported by Bill C-16, which defends the rights of transgender people and makes it illegal to discriminate based on “gender identity or expression.”

Facebook Will Now Let You Fill In Whatever Gender You Want

Facebook’s official “Diversity” account announced another sweeping change to the gender selection on users’ profiles. Starting today, users of Facebook’s English sites can type pretty much whatever they want into a custom box.

“We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way,” the unnamed Diversity account holder said.

This change follows in the footsteps of Facebook’s decision last year to expand its gender options, which were previously limited to male, female, or no response. Just like the last update, users must type their preferred gender descriptor after choosing “other,” and Facebook will suggest terms from its prior list like “androgynous” and “gender fluid.” However, if users want to type in their own descriptor, they can now do so—and then choose whether that descriptor is shown publicly, to friends, or privately. Users can also still choose a preferred pronoun: him, her, or they/them.

Music Video of the Day: Girls Chase Boys

I’m really liking this music vid by Ingrid Michaelson, done as a modernized homage to Robert Plant’s “Simply Irresistible” — so much lovely guyliner and gender-switching to enjoy!

International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia

International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia

May 17th, 2014 is the 9th annual International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia, the biggest LGBTI solidarity event in the world. May 17 actions are set to take place in over 120 countries today. At the start of the Day worldwide, various top global figures have already come out in support for May 17 around the world, from US President Barack Obama, to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Today, 2.8 billion people worldwide live in one of the 81 countries, which still criminalize same-sex acts. 4.9 billion people – 2/3 of the world’s population – have their right to information or expression around sexual and gender diversity systematically censored by states. Yet today’s global May 17th commemorations are set to send a clear signal that human rights for all are shared values for billions of people worldwide.

Facebook Adds Numerous New Gender Choices For Profiles

Social network Facebook has recently introduced dozens of options for users to identify their gender, although the social media giant said it would not be releasing a comprehensive list.

Previously, users had to identify themselves as male or female. They were also given the option of not answering or keeping their gender private. Users can now select a “custom” gender option. Facebook will also allow users to select between three pronouns: “him,” “her” or “their.”

“There’s going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world,” Facebook software engineer Brielle Harrison told the Associated Press. Harrison, who worked on the project, is in the process of gender transition, from male to female.

The move by Facebook represents a basic and a yet significant form of recognition of the nation’s growing transgender rights movement, which has been spurred by veteran activists and young people who identify as transgender at younger and younger ages. The Human Rights Campaign last year found that 10 percent of the 10,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender youths it surveyed used “other” or wrote in their own gender terms.

In the past decade, the transgender movement has become much more organized and outspoken, demanding the kind of civil rights and respect already sought by gay activists. During this time, the transgender umbrella has been growing well beyond transsexuals to encompass a wide variety of gender identities.

The move by Facebook came after years of lobbying from users, some who started Facebook pages to petition for the change. Google+ offers male, female and “other” as choices, but transgender advocates said Facebook’s many specific options puts the platform well ahead of any other online community. About 1 percent of Google+ users identify as other.

Dustin Hoffman on Tootsie and Gender Expectations

A brief but incredibly touching commentary by Dustin Hoffman on gender expectations and how they can affect us, and those around us. Definitely worth the 3 minutes it takes to watch it.

I love how emotional he gets about this topic at the end of the video…
