Canadian Government Finally Rescinds the Tampon Tax

tampon_tax

Starting on July 1st 2015, Canadian women will pay less for feminine hygiene products, as the government *finally* announced that they will be exempting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on “a supply of a product that is marketed exclusively for feminine hygiene purposes and is a sanitary napkin, tampon, sanitary belt, menstrual cup or other similar product.

Over the years, there has been a lot of pressure on the government to remove the tax on feminine hygiene products, however considering that they made $36,398,387 in taxes on feminine hygiene products in last year alone, they have extremely reluctant to make any changes. Several provinces currently still charge the provincial portion of the tax (PST) on these products and have not yet announced any changes to the tax.

Kinky leather shopping…

Kinky Shopping

Yesterday was the first day of spring and it was a rather beautiful day here in Montreal. The sky was blue and clear of clouds, the sun was out and it was relatively warm, as long as you were out of the wind.

I’m still feeling under the weather, but I’ve also been starting to go stir-crazy… Since I was having a better day than most, health-wise, I decided to take the opportunity to “make a break for it” and escape from the house, if even for a few hours. I loaded myself up with my cold medication and brought along a small hoarde of cough drops so that I could keep my voice going.

My co-conspirator for the afternoon would be my best friend, Lady Katana, who is also a member of the Montreal FemDomme Society. We haven’t had the opportunity to spend much time together these past few months, so it seemed like a perfect chance to head out to do some kinky leather shopping and catch up with each other.

We first dropped by Le Melange Magique; it’s been years since I had been here and it was nice to check it out again. I picked up some wonderful scented oils both for use in my henna blends as well as for aromatherapy.

From there we decided to take the scenic route to our next stop by driving along Ste. Catherine street, since it was such a beautiful day. We headed out to Montreal’s Gay Village district, to check out Northbound Leather‘s big going out of business sale, as they are closing their Montreal location.

We spent about an hour there, checking out what stock was left. The store had already been picked clean of all the smaller accessories, so I didn’t have any luck with any of the stuff that I was looking for. I did, however, come across an absolutely gorgeous floor-length black leather coat. It had a very slim fitted waistline that flared out to a very full and flared skirt. The zippered front came up to a very flattering cowl-style hood.

There was only one left and I convinced Lady Katana to try it on. It was a bit snug with her sweater’s bulky sleeves so I found a fitted leather lace-up bodysuit instead to try out under it. My jaw dropped when she came out of the fitting room, as she looked absolutely stunning in the combination! I couldn’t resist snapping a few pics to capture the moment. Even the young salesman thought she looked great in it.

However, even at half-price, it would be almost $700 with tax; which was rather over our budget for the day… I joked that we will have to find her a rich sub to help sponsor her excellent taste in fetish clothing!

Lady Katana did pick up her ticket for next weekend’s April Fool’s Fetish Ball. Several of my kink friends plan on going and we are really looking forward to a night of kinky fun. We stayed for a little while after the store closed and chatted with the friendly young salesman for a while before heading out to find a bite to eat.

We decided to splurge for a nice fancy dinner, since we didn’t find anything we wanted to buy, or could afford to buy at Northbound. So we headed off to one of our favourites – Bâton Rouge. Lady Katana’s side ceasar salad was huge, so we split it. For our main courses, she had filet mignon and I chose the chicken breast and ribs combo. Their ribs are magnificent; smoky and sweet and so tender they literally fall off the bone. As a final luxury we treated ourselves to a nice drink — she selected a Tropical Blitz and I had a non-alcoholic Strawberry Daquiri (I was still on my cold meds after all). However, due to the remnants of my “bug” I wasn’t as hungry as I thought I was, especially after the big salad, and only ate about a quarter of my dinner; so I ended up bringing the rest home.

We were both feeling quite full and rather tired out, so I drove Lady Katana back to her place and headed back home myself. My afternoon’s escapade had definitely taken it’s toll on me and I could barely keep awake and headed off to my comfy bed, to sink into my fluffy duvet and pillows and drifted off to sleep.

My last days in Nova Scotia…

Yet another day trip to Halifax with my Mom — at least it wasn’t raining this time! While she was in her meetings, I took the opportunity to drop by the VenusEnvy store and picked up another bondage book, as well as another 60 feet of that beautiful black rope that I got last time.

We stopped in a small strip mall just the other side of the bridge in Dartmouth on our way back. Found a thrift shop and picked up a wonderful comfy little black leather jacket for under $15; one of the buttons fell off and is in the pocket, but I think I will be replacing them with all-black buttons anyway. It has cute leather cross-lacing detailing at the wrists and at the side slashes on the hips. Perfect for club hopping and such…

Also checked out the dollar store next to the thrift shop and found some great quality hardwood pingpong paddles (will be wonderful for spanking!), as well as some nice rubber-tipped clothespins with a lovely bite.

My Mom had to stop at the local coop credit union to do some banking, so I decided to pass the time in the “coop feed store” next door, looking for kinky stuff… Bingo, hit the jackpot! Found two delightful riding crops, one black and the other a nice burgundy red, for only $6 each! The same quality in an erotic boutique would easily run from $40-$60 each. Man I *so* love tack and riding shops for some of my toys — I can buy so much more for so little! I also picked up two rolls of nice bright red “vet wrap” for mummification purposes.

I can’t believe how many kinky goodies I’ve found on this trip… (giggles to herself)

The next day, before leaving to go back to Montreal, I went to check out my sister’s new antique shop in a nearby little village. It’s in a wonderful old historic two story building, dating from the 1880’s. It’s also next door to another antique shop, so it will help with generating new customers for her as well. She is supposed to open in a few days, so she was still gathering and pricing her items before opening day.

While walking through the shop, I discovered a beautiful antique top hat — something which I’ve been looking for on and off for quite a few years. I always hesitated to order a top hat over the net (especially an antique one) because it can be so hard to tell the quality, condition and how well it fits by only a few pictures.

So it was to my utter delight that I picked it up and put it on my head and found that it fit like it was custom made for me! Wow! My sister was amazed as it is a very small size and nobody who had tried it on over the years has ever fit it. (Apparently she’s had it for over 8 years, but I never knew about it.)

The top hat has maker’s marks from Paris and dates approximately to the 1870-1880’s, so it is around 125 years old. It is in excellent condition and even has the box in which it was imported to London England and then to Canada. It felt so right that it fell into my path and that it fit me so perfectly that I just *had* to buy it! I plan on adding a removable black veiling draping off the back to add a more feminine touch and to wear it to some of my future fetish events as it will go so well with my black leather corset and elbow length black velvet gloves.

Afterwards, my sister and I drove out to a very scenic rocky beach overlooking the north side of Cobequid Bay that she had wanted to share with me. It had a cute little lighthouse with a real house underneath it with a family that still lives in it. It was a spectacular view on a clear and sunny day with the tide coming back into the muddy tidal inlets and the rocky coastline. I had my digital camera with me and took some very nice photographs.

Picked up a few small rounded beach pebbles that “called” to me to bring them home with me. On the way back to the car, a large feather caught my eye at my feet. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that it was an eagle feather! I took it as a special sign that my father was watching over me and that he sent it to me as a reminder that he was always still nearby even though he was no longer living. (He passed away last February and I still miss him dearly.) I tucked it into my top hat box for safekeeping until I return home, to put with the hawk feather he sent me last year during my last trip back from Nova Scotia.

All in all, a nice way to end my visit to Nova Scotia on a positive note. I still had a long drive back but at least I was in a good mood…

There & Back Again… (with apologies to JRR Tolkien)

Blue Rain

So, I am back from the past few days on the road, from central Nova Scotia, southwards to Halifax and then out to Cape Breton and back again…

We were only in Halifax for a few hours; I was bringing my Mom to some business meeting. Despite some major road construction in downtown Halifax, I was able to find some parking near my favorite little candy shop, called “Freak Lunchbox”. They have the weirdest and most fun stuff there — almost every type of candy you can imagine and some you’ve never heard of. Also, many brands that we normally don’t get in Canada. They even had several types of “Simpsons” brand mints (as in the animated series).

I couldn’t resist buying an old-fashioned potato gun; I haven’t seen one of those things since I was really young. Also, a cherry-flavoured gummy pet rat, some authentic “Turkish Delight” (for any of you who’ve ever read “The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe”) and various other bags of goodies. I got out of there with my wallet $35 lighter. But at least I’m not alone… apparently Rob Lowe spent over $90 in that store not long ago and Cybil Sheppard called it “A delightful little store”.

From there I ventured up the street and to my utter delight, I discovered a little shop called “Venus Envy” that I had heard about online. They also have another location in Ottawa. Finally found a copy of Midori’s rope bondage book and picked it up. (I know I could have ordered it online, but I am from the old school of those who prefer to leaf through a book for myself to decide whether it’s worthwhile, before plunking down $40-ish CDN for it.)

Also picked up a great sort of DIY book on how to make all kinds of kinky crafts, toys, tools and furniture. Has all kinds of illustrations and photos. I’m looking forward to having fun with that one, as I’ve always loved creating things with my own hands. That one cost me $55, but it’s a huge softcover that is comparable in size to a big Sears catalog. The name escapes me for the moment, because the book is in a bag in my car. (The Better Bondage Book)

I also picked up a tiny but great handbook on Wax Play, that has some recipes on DIY low heat candles, as I’ve been wanting to create my own, in order to better control the quantity and quality of the ingredients. (I’m a stickler for that sort of thing.)

And lastly, 20 feet of exquisitely beautiful black braided cotton rope. I had seen the same rope at my local Reno Depot at around $2.25 a foot, but there it only cost $1 a foot!

So — an expensive outing that lasted only an hour, and I walked out of there about $140 lighter. So, about $175 for the day and it wasn’t even lunchtime yet! (Aren’t Platinum Mastercards wonderful?) Ouch… but I am very pleased with my purchases and will have lots of fun with them when I get back to Montreal.

I showed my Mom the rope when I picked her up after her meeting and she agreed that it was very nice quality and a very good price too. I also told her about the books I bought and I even explained the basics of wax play on the return drive.

(I know I am repeating myself, but I am sooooooo lucky to have such a *amazingly cool* Mom!)

We stopped at the MicMac Mall in Dartmouth for a bite to eat before heading back north out of the city. Stopped at Mom’s place for a few hours nap and supper, before packing the car and heading out for the 4 hour drive to Sydney, Cape Breton.

Only a bit of rain on the way there and some fog and mist, which of course, slowed down the driving again. We arrived at my Uncle’s in Sydney at about 2 am. I unpacked and managed to unwind with a half hour game of Galactic Battlegrounds on my laptop before catching some ZZZZzzzzzs.

The next day was busy running errands and dropping off promotional material around the city while my Mom was attending her conference. I got a fair bit accomplished in such a short time, so I felt quite happy at the end of the day. We got my Saturn packed up again and hit the road at around 8 pm, only minutes before the downpour started.

Have I mentioned how much it’s rained since I’ve been down here?

Yes?

Well, I’m *really* getting tired of it, as are my aching knees. (I had a hiking accident in Calfornia over 10 years ago and my knees haven’t been the same since…)

We arrived back at my Mom’s a bit after 2 am, but that included a short meal break at a Tim Hortons in Port Hawkesbury. I plugged in my laptop and checked for any important email (again resorting to the agonizingly slow dial-up) and then channel surfed the satellite channels until I was tired/relaxed enough to actually fall asleep.

Was hoping to get some more errands done today (Friday) but the rainy weather (yet again) put a literal damper on things and I took it easy and stayed in and recuperated from the week’s hectic driving schedule around the province.

Not too sure what my weekend holds at this point, as some of it will depend on the weather. I might try to get some work done on my laptop if I’m stuck in again…

Man, I am *so* going into withdrawal from my high-speed cable internet access at home in Montreal — as well as from my usual kinky activities. Ahhhh, but that which does not kill us makes us stronger… or so they say.

So, what does your weekend look like? No rain I hope… Please tell me that you are having more fun and are having better weather than here? TALK TO ME PEOPLE, I’M GOING NUTS OUT HERE!!

Recuperating from the weekend’s fetish fun!

Montreal at night

Well, today has been a wonderfully lazy Monday for me. In some ways I still feel like I am recuperating from this past weekend, but in a wonderful way as I am still feeling very high from all of it.

Starting around Wednesday last week, things started falling into place for having a group of several of us attending Club Sin’s Fetish Friday event. They are held on the 1st and 3rd friday of each month, and I knew I would be out of town for the second one.

We ended up with, ummmm, lets see: Myself, my Dom partner Master Michael, my male sub jon, a new Domme friend I met last month and two of her friends and the last minute addition of Red Claws, who is a part of my Club Fetish gang. So 7 of us in total.

Master Michael and I arrived a bit later than we hoped; parking was hell downtown, but then again it was one of the first really nice weekends in Montreal and people were out “in masse” on Saint Catherine street. In fact, just around the corner from Club Cleo, there was an entire a block and half of motorcycles parked side by side — looked like something out of a Bike & Motor show. Wow, what an assemblage of motor power; it was kinda hot and sexy to see all that chrome and horsepower in one place out in the open.

We finally got parked and up to Club Cleo just before 11 pm and found some of our party already there. We moved over to my favorite large corner booth (the one on the upper tier with the “fence”) and commandeered most of it. (There was a couple in the corner that stayed all night, with her in a full jute or hemp rope body harness under her skirt and blouse and him making subtle adjustments to it most of the night.)

As many of my friends know, I am very much a people-watcher and Fetish Fridays are a great source of observation for all sorts of BDSM, fetish, goth, vampire, leather & latex lovers, as well as a variety of TG/TV/CD folk. A virtual smorgasbord of kinksters! I love it!

Over the months, we’ve gradually given descriptive nicknames to some of the regulars we’ve seen but do not know personally. (It makes it easier to describe who and what kind of crowd were there to somebody who couldn’t make it.)

There is one very slightly built young man that we’ve affectionately dubbed “Bouncy Boy” who *always* dresses in the same head to toe black latex, complete with gloves and full head hood. The name derives from his dancing style which reminds of us a string marionette being bounced up and down. He is quite the active dancer, which has me wondering how exactly he can handle the heat, since it can get quite warm in the club, never mind with all that latex. I certainly admire his endurance!

There was one guy who had us giggling all night… Someone dubbed him “Crooked Thong” for his habit of keeping his thong strap waaaay over on his left butt cheek — it just looked sooooo wrong. I am *so* lucky I wasn’t sipping on my drink when he was first pointed out to me; I would have spiffed it everywhere! I mean, why wear a thong if you are not going to wear it properly? If you really can’t stand the feel of a thong strap between your butt cheeks, why not wear a jockstrap style with the two straps on either side?

I was, however, very pleased to see Maitre Pierre and Mistress Catherine and one of their subs, sabine (dressed in full sissy gear) at the event. I hadn’t seen them since a few weeks back at the local slosh they organized. (A slosh is a bit like a munch but usually held in the evening over drinks and perhaps some munchies, but not usually a full meal.) If you’ve ever watched the show “Kink” on Showcase, Maitre Pierre and Mistress Catherine and their subs were featured on the Montreal-based series, which has been showing this past season.

Mistress Catherine introduced me to Domina Jade at their table. I thought I recognized the name and asked if she also went by AsianKinkySiren online. Indeed, it WAS her and it was such a pleasure to meet her. Later on in the evening, when some of our booth was freed up, I invited her to join our tables. We chatted as best we could with the loud music and discovered that we had quite a bit in common — it was a great way to end the night!

I slept in on Saturday until around noon; I had a great night’s sleep and woke well rested and refreshed. I chatted on the phone with one of my Domme friends, Lady Katana, who lives quite near to me. She needed to run some errands too, so Master Michael and I picked her up in our car and we all did our errands together, as it made the day less tedious and more fun. It’s so delightful having friends who have as warped a sense of humour as you do; it’s nice not to have to explain the pop/media references, the movie quotes, etc.

At the end of the day’s errands, I treated everyone to our favorites at the local Tim Hortons coffee shop — extra large French Vanilla Cappuccinos for Lady Katana and myself, and an Iced Cappuccino for Master Michael. Mmmmmmm…. what a great way to end the day!

Sunday was quite leisurely and easy-going as well, with a few phone calls to track down my Mom and give her my best wishes and an afternoon visit to Master Michael’s Mom to deliver some flowers and spend some time with her… I spent a good part of the evening catching up on email, surfing the Net and working on installing some new software for the Club Fetish site. All in all, a great weekend.

I’m already in the planning stages for this coming weekend’s events; a fetish play party sponsored by Il Bolero on Friday the 13th (they recently changed the date so it wouldn’t conflict with other similar events) and changed the location to a new bar, Club L’Eclipse. I’ve never been to it, as it was always held on the same day as the Club Sin Fetish Fridays, and I love those. I’m hoping to check it out with my sub and a Domme friend so we can do a review of it for Club Fetish.

On Saturday the 14th, there is a BDSM-themed night being held at Le Chateau. Again my sub jon, and another Domme friend of mine are planning on attending, as we had such a great time there together last month, with some other of our friends.

This will be my last weekend in town before heading out to the Maritimes until the end of the month… Things are certainly more “rural” out there as regards the BDSM & Fetish scenes, so I want to fill my system to last me until I get back!!

Deep Thoughts on Mother’s Day

Isn’t it the greatest when you realize your Mom is an even more cool lady then you ever thought possible? Today being Mother’s Day, it got me thinking about my own Mom and how she’s been such a big part of my life and gave me the strength to be who I am today.

The hard part of coming “out” as a Domme to some friends and family is trying to figure out how they will “take it”. In some ways, I figured I could handle or ignore any of my family finding out, but I wasn’t too sure how my Mom would handle it. She is definitely from another generation and was largely raised by nuns in a boarding school and so had a fairly narrow upbringing, fell in love with my Dad and was married at age 18. She will be celebrating her 65th birthday next month.

My father passed away very suddenly last year in late February after having survived several heart attacks, having a pacemaker installed and two types of cancer. I travelled back to the Maritimes (Eastern Canada) for the funeral and ended up staying a good part of the year helping my Mom, keeping her company and helping her get her life back together. In many ways, it was a time of discovery for myself as well, as it allowed me to take a “step back” from my own life and gain some perspective on a lot of things that were overwhelming me. It also allowed me to spend the most time I’ve ever had with my Mom since I graduated high school and went out on my own… We ended up bonding even more, if that is possible.

So, here it was back in January that my Mom comes to stay with us here in Montreal for a week to get a change of scenery and take it easy. Now I have a huge “write-on/wipe-off” calendar covering the freezer door of my fridge, so as to keep track of various events, activities, meetings, holidays and such. I forgot that my Mom was there and hadn’t changed any of the names… so here she comes to me and asks “What’s Fetish Friday?”

Hmmmmmmmm

Wow.

Oh boy, where do I even start?

A couple months back, I *had* mentioned a growing interest to her in some aspects of the leather fashion scene here in Montreal, as my parents are native and were quite well known for their custom-made native-style leather clothing, as far back as the 70’s. So *that* she understood… She had even heard the word “fetish” because it is also associated with tiny native/aboriginal figurines. She also knew of my interest in theatrical makeup and scifi/fantasy costuming through the years. (Heck, she even helped me with some of my award-winning costumes!)

So I managed to tie these aspects all together to explain the lighter aspects of the fetish club scene, leaving out the heavier kink aspects. She definitely understood the people-watching/voyeristic aspects of it, as Montreal is definitely a great place to people-watch all year ’round. (If you’ve ever seen all the cafés on St. Denis street, you know what I mean…)

I managed to explain the basics of dominant/submissive relationships and she easily grasped that concept, as my parents had often been considered gurus/leaders/guides by *many* other people throughout their lives and helped to guide them to a better way of life by understanding themselves better.

In particular, my Mom reminded me of a young native man who ended up living with our family for over a year when I was around 6; as he had a strong need to be guided and naturally gravitated to my parents. He helped out in our family’s store as well as around the house and such, almost like a family member. After some consideration, my Mom realizes that he must have had some sub tendencies to their dominant personalities, without the kink involved — therefore she know understood what I was talking about. Mom and I stayed up to the wee hours of the morning, discussing the many other forms of D/s relationships we’ve seen through the years. It was quite an enjoyable and refreshing eye-opener for both of us…

The week before, I had splurged and ordered myself a gorgeous black lambskin corset as a late Christmas present for myself, to wear to the January Fetish Friday event and it finally arrived the day before. So, to end things off, it was my own Mom who laced me into my first leather corset! And of course I couldn’t resist telling her “tighter, Mommy, tighter!” (à la Scarlett O’Hara-style), while we both giggled ourselves silly before she sent me off for my evening of fun…

Wow, now isn’t that the coolest Mom?

** Mom, you are and have been the best and strongest woman in my life. And through the years, you’ve taught me to be strong within myself no matter what life throws at you, and that has undoubtedly been the best lesson I’ve ever learnt. **
