Celebrate the 15th Annual Bisexuality Day

bisexual_ribbon

Since it’s inception in 1999, this day is a call for bisexual people and their families, friends and supporters to recognize and celebrate bisexuality, bisexual history, bisexual community and culture, and the bisexual people in their lives.

This celebration of bisexuality in particular, as opposed to general LGBT events, was conceived as a response to the prejudice and marginalization of the bisexual persons by some in both the straight and greater LGBT communities.

When Jenna Talackova was disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada for being born male, her story made headlines all over the world. But since successfully fighting the rules to re-enter the competition, the 25-year-old has pushed even farther to pursue a career in modelling and acting.

Her journey to follow through on her ambitions, without being pigeonholed, has been documented in a new E! series that premieres this Sunday: “Brave New Girls”. Talackova discusses the media firestorm than surrounded her in 2012, why she doesn’t want her transgender identity to be seen as a gimmick, and why she’s decided to share her story, on different terms, today.

Article: Sun Media features 1st transsexual Sunshine Girl

“We’ve come a long way, baby — even if they don’t always notice. On May 10, Amelia Maltepe made the pages of the Sun Media papers as the Sunshine Girl — the daily piece of female eye-candy on page 3 — and ended up being a big first for the paper, even if its staffers weren’t aware.

Maltepe is the paper’s first known transsexual Sunshine Girl. “They didn’t ask me, I didn’t tell,” Maltepe tells Xtra. And, according to the Sun’s editor, they certainly don’t mind.”

Significant changes are coming about in the world…

“Next month, Pakistan will hold its first election in five years. And just by running, some candidates will be making history. Two female candidates are contesting the election in extremely conservative areas where women have never run for office. Article: House of Commons Approves Transgender Rights Bill

An interesting development: A bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against transgender Canadians was approved by the House of Commons today.

“Transgender and transsexual citizens are among the most marginalized and are too often victims of harassment and acts of violence.”

The bill had triggered vigorous, sometimes emotional debate in the Commons, and no big surprise, “Prime Minister Stephen Harper, most of his front bench and the vast majority of his backbenchers opposed it.”
